How to Make a Crystal Grid
What it is
A crystal grid is a deliberate arrangement of stones in a geometric pattern, built around a single intention. The symmetry gives you something calm to focus on, and the act of placing each stone is a slow, mindful ritual. Many people build a grid at the new moon and take it down at the full moon.
What you'll need
- A center stone: a crystal point, sphere or larger tumbled stone Affiliate placeholder
- 6–12 smaller tumbled stones (see our crystal guide to choose) Affiliate placeholder
- Optional: 6 small quartz points for the outer ring Affiliate placeholder
- A grid cloth, or paper, a compass and a ruler to draw your own
- A slip of paper for your intention
Step by step
- Clear a flat surface where the grid can stay undisturbed for a while.
- Draw your layout: a circle of six points around a center (a hexagon) is the simplest; the "Seed of Life" (seven overlapping circles) is a classic.
- Write your intention on paper, fold it and place it at the center.
- Place the center stone on top. It represents the intention itself.
- Working outward, set the supporting stones on the points of the pattern. Many people go clockwise, naming the intention as they place each one.
- Optional: "activate" the grid by tracing a line from stone to stone with a quartz point or your finger, connecting the pattern.
- Leave it in place for a lunar cycle. Check in with it each day, then thank and clear it, perhaps under the full moon (see cleansing crystals).
Grid ideas by intention
| Intention | Center | Surrounding stones |
|---|---|---|
| Calm and rest | Amethyst | Selenite, Moonstone, Smoky Quartz |
| Love and self-compassion | Rose Quartz | Moonstone, Green Aventurine |
| Courage and motivation | Carnelian | Citrine, Tiger's Eye, Pyrite |
| Clarity and focus | Clear Quartz | Lapis Lazuli, Clear Quartz points |
| Grounding and protection | Black Tourmaline | Smoky Quartz, Obsidian |
Safety notes
- Small parts: Small tumbled stones are a choking hazard. Keep grids out of reach of young children and pets.
- Sunlight: Don't leave a grid in strong direct sun: quartz spheres can focus sunlight like a lens, and amethyst and rose quartz fade.
Variations
- Moon-phase grid: use stones from our crystals for each moon phase list.
- Pocket grid: draw the pattern inside a small tin lid.
- Tarot grid: place your card of the day at the center.
