How to Make Moon Water (Safely)
What it is
Moon water is simply water left out overnight under the moon, most often the full moon, while you hold an intention. It is used to water plants, anoint candles, rinse water-safe crystals, or add to a room spray. It's one of the easiest and most popular moon rituals. Our moon rituals page has the short version; this is the full guide.
What you'll need
- A clean glass jar or bottle with a lid Affiliate placeholder
- Tap, filtered or spring water
- Optional: a water-safe crystal (clear quartz or amethyst) to set beside the jar
- A label and pen
Step by step
- Check the date of the next full moon on our moon calendar.
- Wash the jar well and fill it with water.
- Hold the jar, close your eyes, and say or think your intention for the cycle.
- Put the lid on (to keep out insects and debris), then set the jar outside or on a windowsill where moonlight can reach it. Cloudy nights work too: in tradition, the moon's presence matters more than the view.
- Bring it in before the sun gets strong. Label it with the date and the moon's name and sign.
- Use it within a week or two: water a plant you're nurturing alongside a goal, mist your altar, or anoint a candle.
Safety notes
- Drinking: Moon water is for ritual use. If you want to drink any, use drinking water in a covered jar and treat it as you would any water left out overnight. Never drink water that has had stones or herbs in it.
- Crystals: Don't put stones in water you'll drink. Some, like malachite, contain toxic minerals, and selenite dissolves. Set the stone next to the jar instead.
- Storage: Store in the fridge and discard after two weeks or if it looks cloudy.
Variations
- New moon water: made at the dark moon, for beginnings.
- Moon water room spray: mix with a little witch hazel in a spray bottle (no essential oils if you have cats or birds).
- Eclipse water: some people avoid eclipse nights; others seek them out. Our calendar lists 2027's eclipses.
