Pressed Flower Bookmarks and Moon Altar Cards

⏱ 30 minutes, plus 2–4 weeks pressingDifficulty: EasyCost: $

What it is

Pressing flowers is a way of keeping a moment: blooms from a birthday, a walk, or the week of a full moon. Many people press a flower at each full moon and keep a "lunar herbarium," or use pressed-flower cards to mark their place in a tarot or moon journal.

What you'll need

  • Flowers with flat faces: pansies, violas, cosmos, ferns, daisies, lavender sprigs, rose petals
  • A heavy book and baking parchment or blotting paper, or a flower press Affiliate placeholder
  • Heavy watercolor paper or card, cut to 5 × 18 cm (2 × 7 in)
  • Clear self-adhesive laminating sheets or contact paper, or clear-drying craft glue Affiliate placeholder
  • Hole punch and ribbon or cotton cord
  • Optional: gold paint pen for drawing moon phases Affiliate placeholder

Step by step

  1. Pick flowers mid-morning when they are dry. Thick centers (like big daisies) can be sliced in half.
  2. Lay each flower face down between two sheets of parchment inside a heavy book, not touching each other. Stack more books on top.
  3. Leave 2–4 weeks. Check after one week and replace damp paper so nothing goes moldy.
  4. Plan your design on the card. Try a single bloom, or a column of small flowers arranged like the phases of the moon.
  5. Fix each flower with a tiny dot of glue using a toothpick.
  6. Cover the card with a laminating sheet, smoothing from one end to avoid bubbles. Trim the edges, leaving a 3 mm border.
  7. Punch a hole at the top and tie on a ribbon.
